History and Development

Founded in 1948 following the donation of the castle and grounds by the Earl of Plymouth, St Fagans was inspired by Scandinavian open-air museums and pioneered the concept in the UK of exploring history through everyday life. Over 50 historic buildings from across Wales have been carefully dismantled and re-erected on site, representing rural, industrial, and urban Welsh life from various periods.

A major £30 million redevelopment completed in 2018 enhanced the museum with new galleries, refurbished historic buildings, a modern reception, restaurant, play area, and learning spaces. This transformation earned St Fagans the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year award in 2019 for its innovation and community engagement.

What to See and Do

  • Historic Buildings: Explore over forty original structures including farmhouses, ironworkers’ cottages, a medieval church, Victorian school, chapel, and the Workmen’s Institute.

  • Craft Demonstrations: Watch traditional craftspeople at work—blacksmiths, clogmakers, weavers, and millers—bringing Welsh heritage to life with hands-on demonstrations and products for sale.

  • Gardens and Grounds: Wander through formal castle gardens, cottage gardens, and woodlands that are home to native wildlife and rare species.

  • Events and Festivals: Enjoy seasonal celebrations, music, dance, and cultural events that showcase Welsh traditions year-round.

  • Interactive Galleries: Newly designed galleries invite visitors to engage with Welsh history through play, craft, and digital storytelling.

Visitor Information

  • Admission: Entry to the museum is free, supported by the Welsh Government.

  • Facilities: On-site amenities include a restaurant, two cafés, a tea room, and a fish and chip shop.

  • Accessibility: Most areas are wheelchair accessible, though some historic buildings have limited access due to their age.
